From the Press Release: “The AFAI is the Regional Coordinator for the International Federation of Arts Councils and Culture Agencies (IFACCA) in Africa. Organisations wishing to attend and are in need of financial assistance have until 15 April 2011 to submit bursary applications to IFACCA. Online registration for the Summit is now open at www.artsummit.org The 5th World Summit for Arts and Culture is jointly hosted by IFACCA and the Australia Council for the Arts, in partnership with Arts Victoria. It will take place in Melbourne from 3 to 6 October 2011. The Summit will bring together government and cultural leaders from over 80 countries to explore the theme Creative Intersections. Events and discussion will be around how artists can give voice to diverse communities and concerns through collaborations with experts in health and well-being, the environment, education, business, new technologies, cultural identity and more. Preliminary programme details will be announced during April. The cultural programme for the Summit will be arranged by Melbourne Festival, with the support of Arts Victoria. A four-day programme of arts events will be organized by Melbourne Festival Artistic Director, Brett Sheehy, from 3 October, culminating in the opening night of the Festival on the evening of 6 October. The 4th World Summit, held in Johannesburg in 2009, attracted 450 delegates from 70 countries. Two-hundred-and-fifty delegates represented 31 African countries, the highest ever for a World Summit. It was co-hosted by the National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC). AFAI facilitated the first meeting of the African Chapter of IFACCA at the Harare International Festival of the Arts in Zimbabwe during 2010.
